The trial of the man accused of killing 22-year-old Laken Riley began in Athens, Ga., with prosecutors outlining how they think the suspect killed the nursing student who was out for a run. The defense argued that the evidence is circumstantial and complained about how the case has become political.

But a brutal attack sent shockwaves throughout the city and state. Laken Hope Riley, a former University of Georgia student enrolled in an Athens-based nursing program run by Augusta College,

"Fulton County Jail fails to adequately protect incarcerated people from the substantial risk of serious harm from violence, including homicides and stabbings by other incarcerated people," a report released by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division said.

The report follows a federal investigation to assess conditions in Fulton County jails, focusing on detainees' living conditions and access to care.
