Nez Perce County prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty for Nicholas Umphenour, the man who helped coordinate an Idaho prison escape and hospital ambush that led to the killing of 83-year-old Juliaetta resident James Mauney.

Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against one of the men involved in the ambush at a Saint Alphonsus hospital in Boise earlier this year if he’s found guilty of the first-degree murder of a North Idaho man, according to a news release from the Nez Perce County Prosecutor’s Office and online court records.

Umphenour and Skylar Meade, the Boise inmate, are accused of killing Mauney while they were on the run from authorities following an incident in Boise.
